Another great Evangelist was William Carey. He was converted as a teenager and began to preach at 24. In 1792 he published a small book called "An Enquiry Into the Obligation of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens" (this is the shortened title!) A quote from the book explains the call of evangelism wired into every single disciple of Christ- he writes, "This commission was as extensive as possible, and laid the disciples under obligation to disperse themselves into every country of the habitable globe, and preach to all the inhabitants without exception, or limitation." This great man of God preached the Gospel and encouraged Pastors to give to missions work. Carey and his family moved from Europe to a Danish colony in India. During those many years he pastored, preached, and translated the Bible into 37 languages. He helped to abolish the "suttee" practice where Hindu widows were burned to death alive at their husbands funeral service bonfire. He also founded a Bible College, and botanical gardens. He accomplished so much while experiencing personal setbacks and constant family troubles, yet he never looked back, he kept right on working and reaching the lost. As you read this may your heart be stirred toward missions work if it hasn't been already! If you are a Pastor may the LORD raise up people in your church that can be sent to other countries to preach the Gospel. In addition there are already many established churches and missionaries over seas who could advance the kingdom of God just as rapidly with your churches support, and they could do it with less money than over here in the States.
